“Upon entering the Design Profession in 1983, my principal handed me a construction dictionary and an application to join SDA, and although both proved invaluable, my membership in SDA provided me with the tools I needed to lead some large architect firms in Dallas and the National SDA organization. It also became the catalyst to start my own placement recruiting firm and consulting services.

I feel SDA’s “resources”and “value membership” benefit not only me, as a design professional, but also the firms and candidates I represent and serve today in our Industry.”

B. Carole Steadham, SDA/C, Hon. AIA
Past SDA National President

Who is SDA?

For over 50 years, the Society for Design Administration (SDA) has promoted education and best practices in management and professional standards of design firm administrative personnel. SDA Membership stretches across the United States and Canada and is composed of personnel in the design profession, including architecture, engineering, construction, landscape and interior design.

The SDA Story

To preserve our SDA heritage, 1988 National President Wanda G. Holcombe, SDA/C, dreamed of tracing our roots and the aspirations of our founders from the beginning to the present. A committee chaired by Mildred Arnold, SDA/C (Dallas), accomplished this goal by publishing The SAA Story in 1989. Since that time our organization has evolved and the SDA Story has been updated to record those changes.

The Dallas Chapter is proud of the part it played as one of the early chapters of SDA.  In 1969, Dallas formed a chapter called the Society of Architectural Secretaries (SAS) with 30 members.  Their purpose was to facilitate communication amongst architectural secretaries to further their education in all areas of architectural secretarial work, to enhance their abilities in that field, and in general, to effectively contribute to the advancement of the profession of architecture.

The Dallas Chapter, has come a long way since our humble beginnings, and while we have expanded our reach to all aspects of operations and administration, we have remained passionate about the success of our members.  We believe that as a group we are stronger, and that collaboration, knowledge and the creation of relevant lifelong connections empowers and drives the professional growth of our members.

  1. Can I simply say what a relief to discover someone who really understands what they are discussing online.
You actually know how to bring an issue to light and make it important.
More and more people must read this and understand this
side of the story. I was surprised that you’re not more popular
since you most certainly possess the gift.
